Everything you need to know about Told Me.
A: ToldMe is a social recommendation tracking app that helps you remember every 'you have to try this' moment from friends, family, and other sources. It tracks who recommended what, preserves the context, and helps you discover which people give you the best recommendations over time.
A: Yes, you need to create an account to use ToldMe. You can sign in with Google or email/password to get started.
A: Your data is synced to secure cloud storage, allowing you to access your recommendations across multiple devices.
A: ToldMe includes 7 default categories available for free: Movie, Music, TV Show, Restaurant, Book, Podcast, and Product.
A: You can create custom categories with a Pro membership. Pro members can create categories to keep track of anything they can imagine—there's no limit.
A: Yes! Go to Settings → Manage Categories and toggle visibility for any category. This removes it from your filters and dropdown menus. Note: You must keep at least one category active.
A: When deleting a custom category, you'll be prompted to either move those recommendations to the 'Other' category or select a different existing category to reassign them to.
A: Yes! In Manage Categories, you can set a default category that will be automatically selected when adding new recommendations.
A: Tap the + button on the home screen, enter the title, select a category, set priority, choose who recommended it, and optionally add notes. The app will automatically check for duplicates as you type.
A: ToldMe uses smart duplicate detection. If a similar recommendation exists, you'll see an alert with three options: View the existing recommendation, Add yourself as another recommender to the existing item, or Create a new recommendation anyway (if it's intentionally different).
A: Priority helps you decide what to tackle next: High (|||) means must-try recommendations you're most excited about, Medium (||) means interesting but not urgent, and Low (|) means nice to have if you get around to it.
A: Yes! You can edit any recommendation and change its priority at any time. All changes are tracked in the recommendation's timeline.
A: Completing means you actually tried the recommendation and can rate your experience. Skipping means you decided not to pursue it, and you can optionally provide a reason (not interested, too expensive, etc.).
A: You're rating how good the recommendation was for you—not the item itself. For example, if a friend recommended a restaurant you ended up hating, you'd give it a low rating because it wasn't a good recommendation for your taste.
A: Each person's trust score (1-5 stars) is based on: The average rating of all completed recommendations from them, Your completion rate of their suggestions, and Total number of recommendations they've made.
A: Over time, trust scores reveal whose taste genuinely aligns with yours. You might discover that Sarah's restaurant picks are perfect (4.8 stars average) while her book suggestions rarely land (2.1 stars average).
A: Yes! Visit a person's profile from the People screen to see their overall stats and how their recommendations perform in different categories.
A: That's one of ToldMe's unique features! When adding a recommendation, if a duplicate is detected, you can add yourself as an additional recommender. Both people will get credit when you rate it.
A: Open the recommendation detail screen, tap the three-dot menu, select 'Edit,' and add additional recommenders in the 'Who told you?' section.
A: Yes. When you rate a completed recommendation, that rating applies to all people who recommended it, since you're rating the recommendation itself, not individual people.
A: Use the search bar at the top of the home screen. It searches across titles, notes, categories, and recommender names.
A: Yes! Go to the People screen, tap on that person's profile, and you'll see all their recommendations with filters for Pending/Completed/Skipped.
A: You can combine filters on the home screen: Status tabs (All/Pending/Done/Skipped), Category tabs (horizontal scroll), Priority filter (toggle between All/High/Medium/Low), and Search text.
A: Those show how many recommendations you have in each category with your current filters applied. For example, if you're viewing 'Pending' items, the numbers show pending items per category.
A: ToldMe includes a quick-add option called 'Myself' for items you found yourself and want to try.
A: You cannot edit the special 'Myself' recommender, but you can delete custom people you've added. If they have associated recommendations, they'll simply be removed from those items.
A: On the People screen, you can sort by: Most Recommended (Who has given you the most suggestions), Highest Rated (Who has the best trust score), or Name (Alphabetical order).
A: Yes! After rating a completed recommendation, a 'Share Your Thoughts' modal appears. You can use the native share options (SMS, WhatsApp, email, etc.) to send a formatted message to the people who recommended it.
A: Something like: 'Just watched The Bear - 5 stars! 🌟 Thanks for the rec!'
A: No, it's completely optional. You can tap 'Skip for Now' to dismiss the share modal.
A: No, the system tracks who you've shared feedback with and only shows those you haven't contacted yet about that specific recommendation.
A: Every recommendation maintains a complete history of changes, including when it was created, status changes, priority adjustments, new recommenders added, and ratings given.
A: Open any recommendation's detail screen and scroll down to the Timeline section. You'll see chronological events with icons and timestamps.
A: Yes! Go to the Insights page and scroll to Recent Activity, or tap 'View All Activity' to see a complete history of every action across all recommendations.
A: The Insights page shows: Your most frequent category, Who gives you the most recommendations, Recent activity timeline, and Completion patterns.
A: Tapping it filters your home screen to show only items in that category, making it easier to focus on your most active area.
A: It identifies who gives you the most suggestions overall. Tapping it navigates to their profile to see all their recommendations and stats.
A: The free version includes: Unlimited recommendations, Up to 5 recommenders, All default categories (Movie, Music, TV Show, Restaurant, Book, Podcast, Product), and Trust scores and insights.
